Surgical Sales Representative (Medical Surgical Devices) – Cape Town

Duties & Responsibilities:

Sales & Customer Relationship Management:

  • Strive to meet and exceed sales budgets as set by the Company
  • Provide supportive services to all allocated customers in assigned geographical areas
  • Promote and sell products to all allocated customers as per defined strategies within assigned geographical areas
  • Develop strong professional relationships with all the customers in the assigned geographical area
  • Strive to deliver excellent service throughout the customer’s business dealings with the company
  • Attend industry trainings, symposiums, congresses and conferences (this includes functions scheduled during evenings and over weekends)


Territory Management:

  • Develop an area plan based on the division’s strategy – ensuring strategic customers and products are included
  • Plan area coverage (country trip included where required) and ensure customers are called on based on the ratings as allocated on the relevant reporting system



  • Pre-planning completed on the reporting system 1 week in advance
  • Pre-call planning should be completed prior to each call and must include call objectives, feedback required from previous call, etc.
  • Ensure planning covers minimum requirements for strategic customers per week




  • Close all calls on reporting system immediately after the call is completed – ensure GPS is activated
  • Conduct post-call analysis after each call
  • Record notes on reporting system ensuring it is of strategic relevance and includes follow up items for the next call
  • Report on all relevant market information: changes in customer requirements, competitor activities, complaints, etc.



Product & Concept Knowledge:

  • Ensure product, procedure and concept knowledge is up to date at all times
  • Be prepared to do self-learning on certain products and procedures
  • Commit to spending time in relevant hospital unit gaining practical knowledge of techniques and procedures
  • Ensure knowledge of competitor products and relevant guidelines are updated regularly
  • Ensure knowledge of selling techniques is refined and updated regularly
  • Attend presentations during industry conferences, congresses and symposiums
  • Ensure knowledge of clinical data is up to date at all times – incorporate publications and articles during daily sales calls


Marketing Material & Samples

  • Ensure samples and marketing material is in a pristine and presentable condition at all times
  • Optimize the impact of marketing material and ensure such material is utilized to increase business



  • Good business acumen in terms of understanding the sales potential in allocated area/s
  • Willingness to work after hours should this be required (e.g. training of HCP’s)
  • Assist and guide clients through surgical procedures with your expertise and knowledge
  • Existing Relationships with clients in the area – specifically General Surgeons, Gynaecologists, Orthopaedic Surgeons, Plastic Surgeons and Ophthalmologists, Theatre Unit Managers and Scrub sisters, Pharmacy Managers and Stock Controllers
  • Experience selling consumable surgical products
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Product and Concept Knowledge – including Anatomy and Surgical Procedures relating to the disciplines listed above
  • Established relationships with private and public hospitals in this area would be an advantage
  • Established relationships with Surgeons would be an advantage
  • Relationships and experience working in theatre is essential
  • 2-3 years sales experience with a proven track record would be an advantage
  • Demonstrated ability to work unsupervised


The successful candidate must also have:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills – Afrikaans and English
  • Be self-motivated, good attitude and be able to work under pressure
  • Demonstrated time, territory and admin management
  • Ability to work as part of a team
  • Computer literate – MS Office
