The main purpose of this position:

 

Ensuring that all residents receive optimal healthcare

 

Duties & Responsibilities:

 

Build and Train the Healthcare Team:

  • Be a leader to your healthcare team, who inspires and empowers the Nursing team
  • On call as consultant to the other shifts
  • Training the EN’s, ENA’s and Carers, assist with training on the other shift when needed
  • Assist with EN’s when they require advice on medication
  • Assist and train EN, ENA’s and Care Providers with residents needed regarding any behavioural concerns
  • Ensure that in-house training of all EN, ENA’s and Care Providers are taking place as stipulated in programme

 

Nursing Duties as Part of your Shift:

  • Ensure Carer allocations are in line with caring needs of residents and that care given by Nursing team is of a high standard
  • Wound care and Catheter care

 

Compiling reports for:

  • Incidents
  • Resident Care Operations
  • Hand-over on completion of shift
  • Ensure files in nursing station are up to date
  • WCA
  • Daily reports to Estate Manager

 

Daily Tasks and Checks:

  • Ensure that medicine is administrated correctly and chart in the medicine file
  • Implement and adhere to infection control measurement s and protocols in handling medical waste; bodily fluids; appropriate disposal thereof; and ensure that your team understands and adheres to these measurements
  • Medicine charts; incident reports; resident care operations; neat working environment; clubhouse during activities and meals
  • Body checks, nails and toenails
  • On night duty hourly checks on residents must be done
  • Handling of hearing aids
  • Notify resident family of need to make doctor’s appointment and proceed to make necessary doctor’s appointment (and/or complete referral letter if on night duty and ensure it is handed over to the Health Care Day Shift Leader to continue with finalising the appointment) – inform the Estate Manager of such appointment
  • Accompany residents to Doctors/ specialised visits (mostly day shift)
  • Report back to resident’s family, Estate Manager after doctors / specialist visit

 

Weekly Tasks and Checks:

  • Test Vellux system (night staff once a week)
  • Order incontinence wear (if night shift – complete order electronically and email order through (copy Estate Manager on correspondence)
  • Equip the nursing station and report faulty equipment to the Estate Manager
  • Double checks on blister packs
  • Weekly checks on emergency trolley and first aid kit (to be done by night staff)
  • Ensure all company policies and procedures are adhered to, including reporting any forms of elderly abuse

 

Month Tasks and Checks:

  • Taking responsibility and ensuring the staff duty roster is done correctly
  • Staff allocation as well as the allocation of extra shifts when needed

 

Six Monthly Tasks and Checks:

  • Six monthly script renewal
  • Six monthly assessments on the residents and sign off for other shifts with EN as Shift Leader

 

Assist New Residents in Settling into Clients Care

  • Ensure that all the new residents’ medication has been handed over properly and that we have received all the necessary healthcare reports and information required
  • Mae an appointment with the relevant GP/specialist when a new resident is admitted, if there is no doctor’s report on record
  • Ensure that the integration programme is implemented
  • Ensure that the room is setup
  • Allocate Carer to the new resident
  • Ensure they have an allocated table placement

 

Maintain Health Relationships with Families of the Residents:

  • Reporting relevant healthcare information to the families regarding the residents
  • Informing families of any concerns that are health related, by telephone to the first contact and then after the Estate Manager has been informed, by email to all family members and to cc Estate Manager in all mail correspondence to families
  • Informing Estate Manager and family of any changes in medication after a doctor or specialist visit as soon as possible by telephone, and thereafter send email to all family members with cc to the Estate Manager
  • Ensure written and verbal reports of a residents file is neat, clear, concise and accurate
  • Maintain and build healthy relationships with the families of the residents, building trust and confidence in the level of care, with compassion

 

Other Duties, Including but not Limited to:

  • Liaise with the rest of the Quality of Life team to improve resident’s quality of life
  • Quality of life brainstorms and multi-disciplinary teams
  • Quality of life meetings with family (mostly day shift, although night shift may be requested to attend and/or submit written feedback reports)
  • Facilities and safety – adhere to safety protocols, safety and room checks and follow evacuation and emergency procedures
  • Human resources – manage the Nursing team reporting to you, including monthly staff training, development and education, duty rosters, attendance registers, payroll calculations, recruitment, leave and disciplinary action
