About the Job:

Glasshouse Recruiting is seeking a highly experienced Theatre Scrub Nurse specialising in Ophthalmology, with substantial hands-on experience in both anterior and posterior segment ophthalmic surgical procedures, to join a Day Hospital based in Mbombela, Mpumalanga.

The successful candidate must have extensive ophthalmic theatre experience, including scrubbing for complex and complicated surgical cases, with particular emphasis on posterior segment and vitreoretinal procedures.

We are looking for a clinically competent, detail-oriented nursing professional who is confident working alongside ophthalmic surgeons in a specialised surgical environment while maintaining the highest standards of patient safety, sterile technique and theatre practice

Requirements:

• Qualification as a Professional Nurse with valid SANC registration
• Proven experience working as a Theatre Scrub Nurse
• Essential: Extensive hands-on Ophthalmology theatre scrub experience
• Essential: Experience scrubbing for posterior segment ophthalmic surgical procedures
• Essential: Experience assisting with complex and complicated ophthalmology surgical cases
• Experience in vitreoretinal surgery, including procedures such as vitrectomy and retinal detachment repair
• Experience in anterior segment procedures, including cataract surgery
• Sound knowledge of specialised ophthalmic surgical instrumentation, equipment and consumables
• Familiarity with vitrectomy machines, ophthalmic microscopes and specialised posterior segment instrumentation
• Strong understanding of sterile techniques and infection prevention protocols
• Ability to anticipate surgeons’ requirements during complex ophthalmic procedures
• Ability to work independently and effectively within a multidisciplinary surgical team
• Excellent attention to detail, clinical judgement and communication skills
• Ability to remain calm, focused and accurate during technically demanding surgical procedures
• Applicants must have proven hands-on Ophthalmology scrub experience, including posterior segment surgical procedures and exposure to complex ophthalmic cases

Duties & Responsibilities:

• Scrub and assist ophthalmic surgeons during anterior and posterior segment surgical procedures
• Provide skilled scrub assistance during posterior segment and vitreoretinal surgical cases, including complex procedures
• Assist with surgical procedures such as cataract surgery, vitrectomy, retinal detachment repair and other specialised ophthalmic operations within the candidate’s experience and scope of practice
• Prepare specialised ophthalmic instrumentation, surgical equipment and consumables for each procedure
• Ensure appropriate posterior segment surgical instruments and equipment are available and functioning correctly
• Assist with the preparation and safe handling of vitreoretinal surgical equipment and associated consumables
• Maintain strict sterile technique and infection prevention and control standards
• Anticipate surgeons’ requirements throughout surgical procedures, particularly during technically complex cases
• Perform surgical counts and maintain accurate theatre documentation
• Support patient safety throughout the perioperative process
• Collaborate effectively with ophthalmic surgeons, anaesthetists and theatre nursing staff
• Ensure compliance with relevant nursing standards, hospital policies and procedures
• Assist with efficient theatre workflow, surgical preparation and daily operating schedules
• Maintain high standards of instrument care and equipment handling

The ideal candidate will have a strong background in ophthalmic theatre nursing, with proven experience scrubbing for both anterior and posterior segment procedures.

The successful candidate must be confident assisting ophthalmic surgeons with complicated and technically demanding cases, particularly posterior segment and vitreoretinal surgery, and demonstrate excellent knowledge of specialised ophthalmic equipment and instrumentation.

The candidate must be meticulous, adaptable and capable of working accurately under pressure in a busy specialised day hospital environment
