How to Develop Soft Skills

Soft skills are not just nice-to-haves for companies—they have been found in a recent survey conducted by Upskillist to be essential for business growth and employee wellbeing and engagement

“With the workplace constantly changing and with almost every facet of industry and business having experienced rapid shifts in the past three years, the need for specific skill sets have changed accordingly. Soft skills development is hugely important today and will continue to require attention,” says Upskillist CEO Tara Looney

She Advises:

  • Soft skills are high in demand because they enable change, improve agility and strengthen resilience
  • A definitive list of soft skills is not easy to compile, but good communication skills, critical thinking, problem-solving, listening and empathy are a good start
  • Companies need to assess their employees’ soft skills so they can address any deficits through targeted training courses
  • As part of the upskilling process, companies should establish the particular soft skills needed to meet their needs. For example, for some industries time management is a must-have skill, while in others it is teamwork
