Job Overview

Main Purpose of Job:

 

This company is seeking a hands-on, reliable IT Technician to support their internal IT operations and provide technical and production support at the University of Cape Town (UCT).

This role is a hybrid, floating position that splits time between the company and UCT. At this company, the technician will be responsible for day-to-day IT support, system maintenance, and security. At UCT, the role will focus on providing technical and production support for lecture streaming, ensuring that lectures are successfully delivered to both in-person and online audiences.

Initially, a review of the Head of Department office’s IT infrastructure and systems setup will be conducted. With guidance from the company’s supervisor, improved systems and workflows will then be introduced and implemented to promote greater efficiency and productivity.

The ideal candidate is technically strong, proactive, comfortable working independently, and confident supporting users in both corporate and live teaching environments.

 

Requirements:

 

Required Skills & Experience

 

  • Diploma or degree in Information Technology or related field (or equivalent experience).
  • Proven experience in IT support/IT technician roles.
  • Strong knowledge of Windows and/or macOS operating systems.
  • Experience with networking fundamentals, user account management, and security practices.
  • Hands-on troubleshooting skills for hardware and software issues.
  • Experience with Zoom or similar video conferencing platforms.
  • Comfortable working in live environments where quick problem-solving is required.
  • Valid driver’s licence (preferred, given travel between sites).

 

Advantageous/Nice-to-Have

 

  • Experience with audio-visual or live streaming equipment.
  • Previous experience supporting educational institutions or lecture recordings.
  • Knowledge of cybersecurity best practices.
  • Familiarity with cloud-based tools and services.
  • Strong communication and people skills.

 

Duties & Responsibilities:

 

  1. System Maintenance & IT Support (The Company)

 

  • Maintain, update, and troubleshoot computer hardware, software, and operating systems.
  • Monitor system performance and proactively resolve potential issues.
  • Ensure all IT equipment (laptops, desktops, servers, printers) is fully functional and properly configured.
  • Set up and configure IT infrastructure for new employees (devices, software, access rights).
  • Maintain IT asset registers and documentation.

 

  1. Network Security & Data Management

 

  • Implement and monitor cybersecurity measures, including antivirus software, firewalls, and access control policies.
  • Manage user accounts, passwords, permissions, and access rights.
  • Ensure compliance with data protection regulations and internal security policies.
  • Perform regular data backups and verify recovery procedures.
  • Identify, assess, and respond to security vulnerabilities or incidents.

 

  1. Technical Troubleshooting & User Support

 

  • Provide timely technical assistance to staff for hardware, software, and network-related issues.
  • Diagnose and resolve faults, escalating issues to third-party vendors when necessary.
  • Educate staff on IT best practices and effective use of systems and tools.
  • Create and maintain documentation and a basic knowledge base of recurring issues and solutions.

 

  1. Lecture Streaming & Production Support (UCT)

 

  • Provide on-site technical support for lecture streaming to Zoom.
  • Set up, operate, and monitor audio-visual equipment (cameras, microphones, laptops).
  • Ensure live lectures are streamed smoothly to online audiences.
  • Troubleshoot live technical issues during lectures to minimise disruption.
  • Liaise with lecturers and UCT staff to ensure technical requirements are met.
  • Assist with testing, setup, and breakdown of equipment before and after

 

Typical Daily Tasks

 

  • Responding to IT support requests from the company’s staff.
  • Setting up laptops, software, and system access for new employees.
  • Monitoring system performance and security alerts.
  • Performing backups and basic system checks.
  • Travelling to UCT for scheduled lecture support.
  • Setting up and testing Zoom streaming equipment before lectures.
  • Providing live technical support during lectures.
  • Documenting issues, fixes, and system changes.
  • Coordinating with external IT or AV vendors when needed.
