Job Overview

A Unit Manager in a theatre setting, often a theatre unit manager, is responsible for overseeing the operations and staff within a surgical or operating theatre (or a similar medical facility). This role encompasses clinical leadership, resource management, and ensuring quality patient care within the theatre environment.

 

Job Description

  • Be operational as well as manage the administrative duties
  • Manage the Theatre Department
  • Liaise and communicate with Surgeons
  • Management of staff
  • Ensure adherence to policies and procedures at all times
  • Manage staff according to the Basic Conditions of Employment and the Disciplinary Code, staff-planning and Recruitment and Selection of staff
  • Manage the day to day problem solving.
  • Stock and equipment management including ordering of stock and equipment
  • Accurate billing of stock utilised
  • Training and development of Theatre staff
  • After hours cover as per a roster
  • Conduct regular inspections
  • Maintain infection control strategies and procedures of the hospital
  • Maintain health and safety principles
  • Maintain and apply the required discipline
  • Evaluation, intervention and resolution of patient complaints and queries
  • Prepare daily, weekly and monthly reports
  • Manage ad hoc projects as and when required

 

Minimum Requirements

  • Registration with the South African Nursing Council as a Registered Nurse
  • Post Basic Diploma in Operating Theatre Technique
  • 5 years Operational Experience in a Theatre Unit
  • Scrub experience in Cardiothoracic Neurosurgery and or Ophthalmology will be advantageous
  • Previous experience in a management position will be advantageous
  • Knowledge of the legislative and Occupational Health and Safety requirements
  • Valid Driver’s licence and ability to travel
  • Afterhours availability – own transport

  • Excellent MS Office computer skills, i.e. Outlook, Word, Excel, etc.
  • Knowledge of the Kronos System
